The iPhone 5 is here – What are the changes?
As you are no doubt aware Apple’s iPhone 5 is now with us. At first glance it may not look that different, but it is the biggest redesign of the iPhone so far – it has a larger screen, different shape, new earphones and features. The back and sides are made from a single piece of aluminium and it is 20% lighter than the iPhone 4.
They also announced new iPods and an updated iTunes.
Apple confirmed yesterday that the iPhone 5 will be released on September 21. Unlocked, the phone will cost £529 (16GB), £599 (32GB) and £699 (64GB). Of course you will be able to get it cheaper via contracts.
Apple vice president Phil Schiller said the phone was “the most beautiful product we have ever made.”
You can watch the full announcement over at Apple.
Let’s look at the iPhone 5 a bit closer.
The Screen – With a 4 inch screen it is longer, fitting five rows of apps (along with the permanent ones at the bottom) yet it is no wider giving it a 16:9 aspect ration. It has a resolution of 1,136 x 640 pixels.
New Processor – The ARM-based Apple A6 is the new heart of the phone. It is supposed to be twice as fast as the A5 chip in the iPhone 4S, and has twice the graphics performance. Once fully charged the phone should give eight hours of talk time and 10 hours of video playback.
Lightning Connector – The connector is 80% smaller than the old dock connector and is reversible. However, you may have to get new docks or adapters for your old gear.
Thinner – The new connector and other technological advances means the new phone is thinner. The iPhone 4 was 9.3mm thick. The iPhone 5 is 7.6mm.
Camera – The rear iSight camera is still 8 megapixels. However, it now has a built-in panorama mode that can combine many photos into a single 28MP. The front-facing camera is now an HD FaceTime camera.
Siri – It will be able to launch apps, post updates to Facebook and Twitter and generally understand a lot more. It will also be a feature on the new iPod Touch.

Of course Apple’s announcement wasn’t the only big news. Oreo had this to share on their Facebook page:
Enhanced twisting. Upgraded licking. Better dunking. Same cookie
I see what you did there Oreo people. Very nice.
